Osgood-Lagrone Monument Company

Our History

With roots beginning in 1906, we have a rich history of serving the Panhandle of Texas. In 1996, the final merger of two experienced monument companies, Osgood Monument Co. and Lagrone Monument Co., formed the present day Osgood-Lagrone Monument Company.

Osgood Monument Co. was started in 1906 by Arthur Osgood. The first business location was in Amarillo at 703 Polk Street next to Pike Stroud's Livery Stable. Arthur traveled the High Plains area on horseback or by horse and buggy, selling monuments which he would later deliver using horse-drawn wagons.

In the beginning, stones were shipped in by rail and then transported by wagon to the shop where they were shaped and engraved by hand. In the shop, all the work was painstakingly completed with chisels and hammers with the expert precision and craftsmanship that is still practiced today. In 1956, the business was moved to its current location at 2701 South Buchanan Street in Amarillo.

Meanwhile, The LaGrone family became involved in funeral home and cemetery businesses in 1956. In 1970, just down the road a bit in Canyon, Texas, Odell LaGrone started LaGrone Monument Co. He moved the business to 901 East 27th Street in Amarillo in 1981. Odell and his son, Garre, operated their business at this location until they sold it in 1994.

In 1971, Gene Hartwell bought Osgood Monument Company and operated the business until 1996, at which time he sold the business to Lloyd & Carol Villett. The Villetts had aquired Lagrone Monument Co. two years before. The two companies were combined in 1996, creating the present day Osgood-Lagrone Monument Co. In March of 2009, the Villetts sold the company to Steve & Tom Smith.

Times change, but this has remained true for more than 100 years of service: custom created, personalized monuments enable folks to celebrate their rich family legacies while remembering and celebrating their loved ones. Nothing surpasses the comfort that’s felt when the resting place of a loved one is marked with a special monument that will be there for generations to come.

We have a dedicated staff with over twenty years of experience helping families create that special monument for their loved one. We have an in house art studio, which can customize a particular selection with lasting memories. Engraving is done in our shop in Amarillo. All of our work, from assisting you with your selections, to art work, engraving, and delivery, is performed by experienced craftsman who take pride in their work and have compassion and understanding of this special moment in the lives of our customers.

Today, we still carry on our rich history of quality, service, and dedication to satisfied customers. We look forward to helping you create special monuments for your family.
