Osgood Monument Co. was started in 1906 by Arthur Osgood. The first business location was in Amarillo at 703 Polk Street next to Pike Stroud's Livery Stable. Arthur traveled the High Plains area on horseback or by horse and buggy selling monuments and later delivering them with horse-drawn wagons.
In the beginning stones were shipped in by rail then transported by wagon to the shop where they were shaped and engraved by hand. In the shop all the work was completed with chisels and hammers.
In 1956 the business was moved to its current location at 2701 South Buchanan Street in Amarillo, Texas.
In 1970 Odell LaGrone started LaGrone Monument Co. in Canyon Texas and operated at that location until he moved the business to 901 East 27th Street in Amarillo in 1981. Odell and his son, Garre, operated their business at this location until they sold it in 1994.The LaGrone's have been involved in Funeral Home and Cemetery businesses since 1956.
On May 17, 1971, Gene Hartwell bought Osgood Monument Company from Helen Osgood and Charles Lutz. Helen was a daughter of Arthur Osgood. Gene operated the business until March 18, 1996, at which time he sold the business to Lloyd & Carol Villett. |
